Undersized gowning rooms are the silent enemy of cleanroom compliance. A quick guide to right-sizing them for shift changes.

Designing Cleanroom Gowning Rooms That Scale with Headcount

Gowning rooms are frequently designed by copying whatever the previous project used, which is why so many pharma sites end up with congested change areas at shift start.

Start with a queuing simulation. Feed in the number of operators per shift, the average gowning time, and the acceptable wait target. A 90-second wait is a good benchmark for GMP sites.

Next, resist the temptation to combine airlocks with sit-down changing. Sit-down zones must be pressure-neutral to the process side, or the seated operator drags contamination inward every time they stand up.

Finally, plan for growth. Overprovision floor tiles by 20% so future partitions can shift without breaking the wall-panel modularity. This one detail has saved several of our clients from disruptive expansions.
